    Description

    These mint Portuguese Guinea 1971 Fifty and One Hundred Escudos were the last banknotes issues before it became an independent nation of Guinea-Bissau in 1974. The backs of both notes feature a woman looking out at ships through the ages. Six ships, from ancient times to a modern ocean liner are depicted. An additional sailing ship is included in the bank seal at bottom left. The front of both notes has a portrait and watermark of Nuno Tristao, a Portuguese slave trader and explorer who is traditionally credited with doscovering Guinea.
